Baillieu Must Deliver More Beds For Casey Hospital

The Baillieu Government has let down families in Melbourne’s south east by failing to provide funding for more beds at Casey Hospital, Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews said today.

Mr Andrews joined Member for Narre Warren South Judith Graley and Member for Eastern Victoria Johan Scheffer to launch a petition calling on the Baillieu Government to provide funding for more beds at Casey Hospital.

“It’s important that families in Melbourne’s south east have access to quality health care close to home but the Baillieu Government appears to have walked away from delivering the investments Casey Hospital needs,” Mr Andrews said.

“Doctors, nurses and health care professionals at Casey Hospital do an amazing job providing quality care to patients but they need support from the Baillieu Government.

“Providing better hospitals and care should be among the Government’s main priorities, but instead residents are yet to see Mr Baillieu provide any new beds at Casey Hospital.

“More and more families are moving to Casey and surrounding areas, and the Government must make sure vital services such as our hospitals can keep up with the growing demand.

“Providing funding to open more beds means more patients can receive the care they need quicker. What’s worrying is the Government’s lack of commitment to our hospital system will mean more patients miss out on vital care.”

The Baillieu Government has failed to match Labor’s $30 million commitment to provide a  new surgical ward with 30 extra beds and a surgical operating theatre at Casey Hospital.

Mr Andrews said the only extra beds Mr Baillieu was attempting to claim credit for was through the COAG deal the Labor State Government struck with the Federal Government and announced last year.

“In eight months, Mr Baillieu has not provided one extra bed, not one extra doctor or one extra nurse in our hospitals. It’s time Mr Baillieu makes a choice to support Victoria’s hospitals,” he said.

Ms Graley encouraged residents to sign the petition.

“This petition is about making sure Mr Baillieu listens and understands that the community wants more investments in their hospital,” Ms Graley said.

“Why isn’t the local Liberal MP Brad Battin standing up for residents and calling on his own Government to provide the funding Casey Hospital needs?” Ms Graley said.

The petition is available at Ms Graley’s electorate office.
