Casey Hospital will get a $106.3 million major expansion under an Andrews Labor Government, building the hospital’s first intensive care unit and opening the doors for thousands of locals in need.

With Labor’s expansion, the dedicated hospital for Melbourne’s south east will meet the needs of one of Australia’s fastest growing areas, catering for 12,000 more patients, 8000 more surgeries and 500 more births.

Labor will build an eight storey inpatient unit from the ground up, with four new operating theatres and a new surgery recovery centre. In total, the size of the hospital will increase 35 per cent.

Labor’s plan includes Casey’s first intensive care unit, so locals living with life threatening illnesses and injuries can get the constant, specialist care they need closer to home – relieving pressure on surrounding hospitals.

CT and MRI services and day surgery admissions at Casey will also be expanded. Ninety six extra beds will be opened, with room created for a further 64 beds if required in the future.

This year, Tony Abbott and Denis Napthine cut funding for a 30 bed rehabilitation unit at Casey Hospital. Across Victoria, Liberal hospital cuts have put our loved ones at risk.

The latest data for Casey Hospital reveals that just over half of category 2 patients receive surgery within 90 days. Under the Liberals, 101 more people are on Casey’s elective surgery waiting list than in 2010.

Casey Hospital is under pressure. Last year, the hospital admitted 38,000 patients and 52,620 people attended the emergency department.
