State Labor Member for Narre Warren South Judith Graley has slammed the Napthine Government’s failure to reinstate Victorian police officers as facilitators in Operation Newstart.

One of the most successful crime prevention programs in Victorian history, Operation Newstart has helped over 200 students from ten local schools reengage with the education system and most importantly their local community.

Ms Graley said that on top of this devastating blow came Tony Abbott’s decision to withdraw a $300,000 grant awarded to Operation Newstart by the previous Labor Government.

“Operation Newstart Casey has done an exceptional job reaching out to our most vulnerable young people and getting them back on track,”

“Unfortunately their hard work has been dismissed and with funding set to run out in July, Operation Newstart Casey is now facing an uncertain and bleak future,”

“As are a generation of young people who have been discarded by the cruel and callous cuts of the Liberals,”

“It is our young people and their families that have been abandoned, left to struggle and fend for themselves,”

“This is a program that can make a difference in their lives and must be saved,”

“I urge the Napthine Government to rethink their appalling decision and reinstate police support.”
