Taxis turned away from Narre Warren Railway Station

State Labor Member for Narre Warren South Judith Graley called on the Napthine Liberal National Government to reinstate taxi parking facilities at Narre Warren Railway Station in Parliament last night.

Ms Graley said that during the construction of additional parking spaces at Narre Warren Railway Station, taxi parking facilities were removed and replaced with disabled parking.

“The provision of 500 additional parking spaces at Narre Warren and Merinda Park Railway Stations was an election promise of the Coalition and I was pleased that funding was allocated in the 2011 State Budget,”

“Unfortunately local residents soon discovered that they had lost 139 of the promised 500 parking spaces to Beaconsfield Station and would be facing an 18 month wait for the spaces to be delivered,”

“Now we have also discovered that Narre Warren Railway Station has lost five spaces for taxis to pick up and drop off passengers as well as four spaces for a taxi rank.”

Paul Smith, Manager of Dandenong Taxis said that the removal of their parking spaces and taxi rank had left their drivers with no safe place to pick up or drop off passengers at Narre Warren Railway Station.

“At night our drivers are forced to sit in the general car park spaces on the other side of the through road next to the disabled parking bays,”

“In February alone we received 310 bookings for pickups at Narre Warren Railway Station, yet our drivers have nowhere to park.”

Ms Graley said that urgent works must be undertaken to provide adequate and safe facilities for both taxis and local residents.

“Taxi drivers do not deserve to be fined and abused while they attempt to find a place to park, and passengers should not be forced to wait alone for taxis at night,”

“Fix the mistake and provide the upgrade local residents were promised Dr Napthine.”
